the beauty of jack kerouac

Lucille would never understand me because I like too many things and get all confused and hung-up running from one falling star to another till I drop. This is the night, what it does to you. I had nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion

because this is strangely calming

10 years ago i was
rushing through my O-level art installation project, reading david eddings on the long bus journeys home, slipping into movie theatres with the pukoos, in a place where nothing cool/stylish/new/jaded could touch me

5 years ago i was
at the age of legal freedom, throwing birthday sparklers into the sea, finding out what it means to miss home, jamming with ni in the halls of NTU over canned food, realizing that i shouldn’t let my education get into the way of my learning

1 year ago i was
recovering from a surgically broken heart, training for everest, sleeping insane hours, thinking of crazy ideas for clients, leaving my hair long

5 things on my to-do list
(1) wait for my sister to come back from the airport
(2) wake up by 7am for training tomorrow
(3) finish ‘no one belongs here more than you’ slowly
(4) meet the pukoo before she zips off to france
(5) remember the death cab concert on the 12th of next month

5 snacks i enjoy
(1) seaweed
(2) marmite, in any form
(3) ruffles bbq chips
(4) chicken wings, slightly charred
(5) does oyster/sashimi count?

if i were a billionaire i would
sponsor my team’s everest climb, provide for my family, publish all the stuff i wrote, buy an art studio, buy a good mountain bike, a retro VW van and classic vespa… and very importantly, hire a kick-ass secretary who’ll clear my schedule so no one can bother me when i want to do stuff not on other people’s agendas

5 people i’d want to have lunch with
(1) isabel allende
(2) eddie izzard
(3) tenzing norgay/edmund hillary
(4) jeanette winterson
(5) all the friends i never had time for

5 places i’ve lived
(1) tiong bahru, singapore
(2) vadesari, a tiny village in tamil nadu, india
(3) kelman hut, mt cook, new zealand
(4) wu se shan zuang, a puny lodge in sichuan, china
(5) a sleeping bag in a tent, somewhere between china and pakistan

5 jobs i’ve had
(1) t-shirt tagger
(2) waitress
(3) freelance designer/scriptwriter
(4) advertising intern who never saw sunlight
(5) copywriter

what’s been keeping us busy

the glass castle

Monday, July 7th, 2008

“I’m starting to feel like a rat in a maze,” he told me. He hated the way everything in Phoenix was so organized, with time cards, bank accounts, telephone bills, parking meters, tax forms, alarm clocks, PTA meetings, and pollsters knocking on the door and prying into your affairs. He hated all the people who lived in air-conditioned houses with the windows permanently sealed, and drove air-conditioned cars to nine-to-five jobs in air-conditioned office buildings that he said were little more than gussied-up prisons.

six minutes, twenty-six seconds
6mins 26sec

these numbers are so easy to type, a matter of flicking my fingers on the right keys. but to complete 30 storeys with a 12kg pack within 6:26 was hell.

you start fast, maintain your speed and find that extra burst of energy at the end to sprint/stumble up the last steps. all the while your chest feels like it’s going to burst from the panting, and your eyes play tricks on you about the floor you’re at.

alternatively, you can also achieve 6:26 by attaching an accelerator device to your back as you climb. today, mine came in the form of lihui tagging at my heels.
